Fordow Nuclear Plant: Iran's nuclear facility lies 300 feet underground beneath a mountain - which country has the power to destroy it?

Iran's Fordow Nuclear Plant remains completely secure despite multiple attacks by Israel. It is the biggest threat to Israel and a matter of concern for the world. The United States also wants to destroy this nuclear facility. Let's understand why the security of the Fordow plant is impenetrable and which country has the capability to destroy it.

In recent days Israel has carried out several attacks on nuclear facilities in Iran, but the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Pant, which is a highly secured site, remains intact. This facility is located beneath a mountain and is built approximately 300 underground.

It has been specifically designed to withstand aerial attacks. Exports believe that it poses the greatest threat to Israel. Currently, Israel does not possess sufficient weaponry to breach Fordow's security. Let's understand why the security of the Fordow pant is considered impenetrable

Is the Fordow plant truly impenetrable?

The Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant is one of Iran's most secretive and secure nuclear facilities. It is located 30 kilometers from Qom and 160 Kilometers from Tehran. The facility was built as part of a missile base controlled by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Crops (IRGC)

When was the fordow pant built, and when did the world come to know about it?

It is believed that around the year 2006, Iran began constructing the Fordow facility under the secret Amad Plan, which aimed to develop nuclear weapons. Its existence remained hidden from the world for years. In 2009, Western intelligence agencies discovered the facility, after which Iran acknowledged it before the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

Who can destroy the Fordow plant?

Exports believe that only the United State possesses the weapons capable of destroying it. The bunker - buster GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) is possible the only bomb powerful enough to reach the core of the Fordow facility.

According to the U.S. Air Force, this bomb weights approximately 13,600 kilograms and is designed to target hardened bunkers and tunnels. It is capable of penetrating about 200 feet below the surface and can be dropped in succession, allowing for effective drilling deep underground.

Which technology makes the Fordow plant the safest?

The main reason for Fordow's security is its depth. This Facility is located 80 to 300 feet underground, which makes it out of reach of regular bombs and even advanced Israeli weapons.

It was built to house around 3000 IR-1 centrifuges, arranged in two separate sections. to air missies, including Russia's S-300 system.

The ability to make four nuclear bombs

Under the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA), Fordow was to be used for peaceful scientific purposes. But after the U.S withdrew from the deal in 2018, Iran restarted enrichment at Fordow.

At present, around 2000 centrifuges, including the advanced IR-6 models, are running at the site. These are enriching uranium up to 60% purity, which is close to the 90% needed for a nuclear weapon.

According to experts, the plant produces about 166 kilogram of  60% enriched uranium every three months which could be enough to make four nuclear bombs.
