What major changes are happening in FIFA World Cup 2026?

⚫ The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to be historic in many ways. For the first time, 48 teams will participate in the tournament, over 100 matches will be played, and there will be a Round of 32. This will be the first World Cup to be jointly hosted by three countries: the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Lasting 39 days, it will be the longest World Cup ever.

⚫  Which countries have won the FIFA World Cup so far?

Uruguay won the first FIFA World Cup in 1930. Brazil has won the most number of FIFA World Cups, with five. The last six FIFA World Cups have been won by six different teams (Brazil, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, and Argentina). The 1958 final, won by Brazil 5–2 against Sweden, was the highest-scoring FIFA World Cup final.

⚫  FIFA World Cup 2026: 5 big game-changing developments

The FIFA World Cup, the four-yearly mega-event of football, is now entering a new era. The next World Cup, the 2026 tournament, will not be just a competition, but a revolution. Let's explore five major changes that will surprise football fans this year.

1. 48 teams: Such a large participation for the first time

All previous World Cups have featured 32 teams, but in 2026, this number will increase to 48, 16 more teams than before. This means that smaller and emerging football nations will also have the opportunity to showcase their skills on the big stage.

2. New format: From group stage to knockout

Now, the 48 teams will be divided into 16 groups, each consisting of three teams. Each team will play only two matches within the group. The top two teams will advance, and then a new round will begin, the "Round of 32," or pre-knockout round.

3. Longest World Cup

The tournament will last approximately 39 days. The previous Qatar World Cup was 29 days long. Such a long tournament will truly test the players' fitness and the coaching staff's strategy.

4. First time three hosts: USA, Canada and Mexico

For the first time in World Cup history, three countries will jointly host the tournament. This means matches will be held in 16 cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, and Mexico City. The final will be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA.

5. Number of matches: Increased from 64 to 104

While there were 64 matches previously, there will now be a total of 104. This means 40 additional matches for football fans.

⚫ World Cup Thrones – Who Scored How Many Goals?

The history of the FIFA World Cup isn't just about trophies, it's about glory, struggle, and unexpected results. There have been 22 World Cups so far, and let's take a look at which country has lifted this illustrious trophy the most.

⚫ Brazil (5 times) – The King

Brazil has won the trophy the most times, five times (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002). Brazil is the only country to qualify for the World Cup every time.

⚫ Germany and Italy (4 times each)

Italy won in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006. Germany (including West Germany) achieved this feat in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014.

Argentina (3 times), France and Uruguay (2 times each)

Argentina won in 1978, 1986, and 2022. France won in 1998 and 2018. Uruguay, winners of the inaugural 1930 World Cup, also won the trophy in 1950.

A unique record: Last 6 World Cups, 6 different champions

Italy in 2006, Spain in 2010, Germany in 2014, France in 2018 and Argentina in 2022 – meaning no team has been able to defend the title consecutively.

⚫ The most explosive final

If you want to see a rain of goals, remember the 1958 final. Brazil defeated Sweden 5-2, scoring a total of 7 goals, the highest ever score in a World Cup final.
