The region's geological location lies at the boundaries of several tectonic plates beneath the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in volcanic mountains, craters, hot springs, and geothermal activity.

According to Portugal's official tourism portal, the Azores have numerous sites of volcanic heritage, with approximately 300 underground volcanic caves, tunnels, and fissures recorded.

Are volcanoes still active in the Azores?

Active and potentially active volcanic systems exist in this region. This does not mean that eruptions are frequent on every island. However, monitoring seismic activity and volcanic risk is crucial here.

In summer: The weather is generally pleasant, but clouds and rain are possible.
Rain: There may be more rainfall in hilly areas.
Winds: Sea breezes can cause sudden changes in weather.
